今日のことわざは「壁に耳あり障子に目あり」です。

由来
だれかが、壁に耳を押し当てて盗み聞いているかもしれないし、障子に穴をあけてのぞき見ているかもしれないことから。
Origin
Someone may be eavesdropping on the wall with his ears pressed, or he may be peeking through a hole in the shoji.
意味
ないしょ話や秘密は他人にもれやすいこと。
meaning
Stories and secrets are easy to leak to others.
例・使い方
ないしょにしていた話なのにゆいちゃんが知っていてびっくりした。
壁に耳あり障子に目ありだから注意していたのに。
Example / How to use
I was surprised to know that Yui-chan knew it though it was a story I hadn’t heard about.
I was careful because there were ears on the wall and eyes on the shoji.
昔の家は声が筒抜け？
日本の伝統的な家は、丈夫な柱や梁で支える構造になっていて、壁は仕切り程度の薄い壁がほとんどでした。
そのため防音効果はあまりなく、となりの部屋の声がよく聞こえたようです。
Is the voice out of the old house?
Traditional Japanese houses have a structure that is supported by strong columns and beams, and most of the walls are as thin as partitions.
Therefore, there was not much soundproofing effect, and it seems that the voice in the next room could be heard well.

最近は都心で障子を見ることが少なくなってきたので「障子に目あり」は、若い方たちには通じなくなるかもしれませんね。
ただ、ないしょ話をするときは、聞かれてるかもしれないので周りをよく見てからしたいものです。
仕事やプライベートの大切な話をするときも気を付けましょう。

Recently, the number of people who see shoji in the city center has decreased, so “I have eyes on shoji” may not be understood by young people.
